CHARACTER NAME; Kovu
AGE; No certain canon age, but young adult (for a lion)
CANON; The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride
CANON POINT; The night after Upendi
FAMILY TYPES; Dragon's Roar, Nature Spirits, Unknown
APPEARANCE;
Kovu's fur is a dark grayish-brown, and his mane is even darker, almost black. He has a broad black nose and a very expressive face, with green eyes set slightly back from his head. The fur around his mouth and under his nose is much lighter, with a slight transition from the darker fur to the lighter and matches the fur on the digits of his paws and along his underbelly. The tuft of fur on the end of his tail is the same color as his mane, and tufts of fur at the elbows of his forelegs match his mane too. He's not particularly large for an adult lion, but he's not skinny by any means. He's muscular and built strong, with powerful shoulders and a sleek predator's frame.
Of course, that's just how he looks as a lion. As a human, his skin is a deep tan - very similar to the color his fur was. His hair is wild and messy, and looks almost the exact same as his mane, still black as night. The hooked lion nose is still vaguely visible in his sharply angled, rather triangular human nose, which is broad at the nostrils but thin at his thick eyebrows. The same broad forehead and widow's peak make up the top of his skull. His jawline is strong, though not square, and his chin is flat, adorned by a thick goatee. He has no other facial hair, though his messy hair hides any sideburns he might have.
His wardrobe is relatively drab, since he never even knew what clothing was while he lived as a lion. This leaves him with mostly single color t-shirts and blue jeans, though as he gets used to human life he'll likely develop a tendency toward screenprinted designs on his shirts, particularly any that remind him of the Pride Lands, or with a more African aesthetic. The jeans probably aren't going anywhere, though, and since he isn't any sort of used to having to wash clothes, each pair is going to end up more dirty fringe than actual pant by the time he's done with them. To say nothing of the black sneakers with white soles and white laces.
PERSONALITY;
Due to his mother's horrible ideals in raising him, Kovu is at best very confused. He isn't sure if he's blunt and forward, or timid and reserved, if he's cheerful or melancholy, if he's a bright star or a dark night. Until he met Kiara, he never had any questions about himself: he was a black soul, ready to fight and kill Simba only to take the throne in Scar's name. He was cold-blooded, murderous, and his only joy came from bullying or injuring others - growing up, he didn't "play" with his two siblings - he fought. The word "fun" was one he never knew until he entered the Pride Lands, but when Kiara finally taught him how to enjoy himself, he found all of his life before melting away.
When she first told him that he was just having fun, when they were chasing birds away from Timon and Pumbaa, he really had no idea what she meant, but he caught on pretty quickly. The rest of that morning was great for him, even getting chased by rhinos. In fact, the whole day went well, and he was starting to cheer up and come out of that shell that his mother had put him in. He even found himself reconsidering what he was going to do, his entire life's purpose, as he began to learn what the world around him really could be. The darkness that Zira had fostered in him was really leaving, and he found himself really feeling like he belonged with Kiara. And that's where he is now - he's still learning more and more about everything, about how much more he could do with his life, and what it feels like to be kind and gentle instead of brutish, cynical, and treacherous.
Old habits die hard, and Kovu is certainly still capable of terrible things, but that ability is tempered by some sincere desire to be better than all of that. But those thoughts can cloud over him very fast. Just one wrong word, and he'll be brought back to the reason he even had the chance to fall in love with Kiara- that he was going to kill her father. He carries a tremendous sense of guilt over just that, and while he never truly acted on it, he can't help but feel like he's still to blame for it.
However, when that subject is avoided, he's left looking a little awkward. While he'll be pretty cheerful and fun-loving, quick to chuckle or play a prank, as soon as an unfamiliar situation arises he'll get totally lost, instead of going with the flow. Even worse, if the new situation makes him too uncomfortable, he'll simply get up and leave, instead of giving himself or those around him the chance to work things out. This can make it pretty difficult for him to really improve as much as he wants to. And to layer it on more, little quirks from growing up as Zira's son still have their marks on him, particularly in what he finds acceptable conversation. His dark demeanor can make itself known pretty easily, in his gruesome sense of humor, his fearsome temper, and his stubbornness. He has no qualms about physical violence, which he hasn't realized yet will just about never be an effective solution to his problems.
If he gets past all that, though, his joviality might just be enough to win a few people over. He might not be the most patient guy in the world, but if you can get him to enjoy himself and laugh just a bit he won't mind waiting quite so much - he is a hunter, after all. He's the type to laugh at others' expense, though he's much more light-hearted with the teasing now than he was before. His stubbornness can almost be endearing, if it turns into determination for the sake of something he cares about - and his passions are intense. Because he grew up in a place where he had almost nothing, barely even enough to eat, he's fiercely protective of what little he has now, be that his friends or his things. He'd take a fatal blow meant for a friend if it meant they'd be safe.
HISTORY;
To start with Kovu's history, the story of his adoptive father Scar must be briefly laid out first. Scar was the younger brother of the King of the Pride Lands, Mufasa. In his jealousy, Scar killed his older brother, and attempted to kill the King's young cub Simba as well. Scar assumed the throne in their absence, and ruled in Mufasa's place - quite poorly. A drought came, and instead of moving with the food, Scar stayed put, dooming the pride to starve. Due to Scar's treachery, and the circumstances Scar had created, Simba grew up blaming himself for the King's death. He wanted nothing to do with the Pride Lands, or his place in that kingdom as its prince. After a visit from his childhood friend Nala, Simba was led to a talk with his father's spirit by a baboon named Rafiki - an old friend of Mufasa's. Newly invigorated, Simba returned to Pride Rock, and dealt with Scar (who was killed in the end by his own minions), and wed Nala. They gave birth to a cub, who would be the new heir.
Simba banished those few lionesses who were loyal to Scar to the Outlands, a desolate, dry desert that lacked even small prey. Their number included Scar's mate, Zira, who was the mother to the cub Scar named his heir: Kovu. The young cub wasn't even Scar's own son, but the evil lion hadn't cared. Kovu would follow in Scar's pawprints, that was his fate. Zira did everything she could to ensure that Kovu would be just the same as his adoptive father.
Simba's cub, the princess Kiara, met Kovu one day, while they were still young. Kovu helped her to get away from a pack of crocodiles, and they exchanged a bit of friendly banter - including an attempt from Kiara to teach the boy how to play tag, which Kovu wasn't all too great at picking up on. But they had only a moment to try to play as cubs, before Simba and Zira found them. Zira offered Kovu, her own cub, as the price for her trespassing, and Simba quickly turned her away. It was a long time before Kovu and Kiara met again, and it was only thanks to Rafiki that the story continued.
Years later, Kiara went on her first solo hunt as an adult lioness. Simba, trying to protect her, had sent his old friends to watch her, but she ran off after finding them. Kovu's siblings Vitani and Nuka were planning for this, and lit grassfires across the plains, giving Kovu the chance to save her. Their second meeting was much like their first, before Simba appeared with the other lionesses from Pride Rock. Simba was immediately distrustful of Kovu, who claimed to have left the banished pride, but Rafiki had been told by Mufasa to try to get Kiara and Kovu together. A single line from the monkey points out very clearly to Simba that he should at least give Kovu a chance, and since Kovu did say he'd left the Outsiders Simba decides to reserve judgment. That night, Simba refused to let Kovu sleep in the cave with his pride, not wanting to give the rogue lion a chance to do any harm.
Kovu's resentment remained strong that night, but the next morning he began to train Kiara to be a better hunter - after she issued him a challenge that she could learn from him. During the training, the two of them come upon Simba's friends (and Kiara's babysitters, the ones she ran away from the day before), Timon and Pumbaa. The two had found a field full of great bugs to eat, but the birds just wouldn't leave them alone. At Timon's request, Kiara and Kovu roared to chase away the pests, and Kovu actually started to enjoy himself - even though when Timon said they were doing it for fun Kovu barely knew what the word meant. The young lion was still laughing even the birds got the help of a herd of rhinos, whose charged led the four new friends into a rather cramped cave. Kovu's lips came very close to Kiara's, creating a pretty awkward moment, but one that ends in laughter. After a quick growl at Timon's noogie, Kovu squeezed himself out of the cave with the others, smiling.
That night, Kiara and Kovu looked up at the stars. Kiara pointed out a rabbit, and Kovu a couple lions fighting over a piece of meat. Kiara gave him a look, but he didn’t even notice. She then told him of how her father used to say that the stars held the spirits of the Great Kings of the Past, and that those kings were always up there, watching over everyone. Kovu, not even thinking, asked if she thought Scar was up there; they looked at each other, and he stood, walking away. He mentions that while Scar wasn’t his father, he was still part of him, and when Kiara comforts him, we learn something that he’s actually scared of—that he's worried he has the same darkness in his heart as Scar.
Instead of facing it, he tries to hide it. Kiara asks him what's bothering him so much, and he starts to explain it - to explain everything. That the fire was set by his siblings, that the whole thing started as Zira's plot to get Kovu closer to Simba...so that he could kill the King, Kaira's father, and take the throne, to rule as Scar's heir. But he can't. He stops as soon as he starts, and when she pushes him, he tries to leave. However, Rafiki, the very baboon who got Simba to let Kovu into the Pride Lands, takes it upon himself to make sure Kovu stays - and introduces both the young lions to something completely new: love. And it changes everything Kovu thought he knew.

Kovu shook his head, finding his vision a bit different from normal. More color, but not quite so clear. He tried to sniff the air to get an idea of where he was, but his nose wasn't quite right either. His ears were really dull too. Come to think of it, everything felt pretty weird. Why did it feel like something was sitting on his shoulders? And like something else was dragging his waist down? He made a face out into what seemed to be empty space, and then looked down at...
No way. This had to be one of Rafiki's tricks again. There was no way that Kovu was an ape now. He pinched himself - something new that he couldn't ever do before, with his paws, and flinched a little. Well, if it was a dream or something, it was a good one. He'd never even imagined what this would be like...and what was this stuff that was on him? It was white, and wrapped around his shoulders, his upper arms, and his chest. Then these blue things were wrapped around his legs. That brought Kovu to another problem.
"How am I supposed to walk like this?" He tried to bend down, but his front legs were too short to support him right, and his shoulders were both too far apart, and flat on his back now. His ribcage was squished up, and he couldn't possibly walk on all fours anymore. He stood again, and looked down at himself one more time.
"Okay...what did Rafiki do?" Carefully, he picked up one back paw - and that was his first mistake. He quickly lost his balance, and had to jam that paw into the ground to keep from falling. And man did that hurt.
An attempt to roar in pain turned into a shout, which got cut off as Kovu heard how strange it sounded. His nose wrinkled as he tried to lift his foot again, this time putting it out in front of him as he fell. That worked a little better, so he tried with the other one.
"Is this how all the apes have to learn to walk? This is stupid..." the former lion remarked, a little annoyed that this was going to take him so long to get used to.
